I just had the urge to see what colours could be made by throwing some berries in a pan with a handful of salt.
Today’s concoctions include elderberry, blackberry and redcurrant. The elderberry and blackberry are very similar, the blackberry is just a little more pink.
The samples are all cotton, silk, or wool and I soaked them for different times. Wasn’t sure it would be worth dyeing for 15 mins but it was, I got the most deliciously dark pink/purple.
This was just a fun play – I really don’t know enough about natural dyes but I’ve ordered a holiday book to learn some more.
I hope some natural dyes might figure in whatever final piece I do for my Experimental Textiles course. I’ve frozen some foraged berries for later!
